The History of Concrete
Concrete is one of the most widely used building materials in the world. Ton for ton it is used and consumed twice as much as steel, wood, plastics, and aluminum combined. The Ready-mix concrete industry is the largest segment of the concrete market worldwide. By the year 2025, its revenues are projected to exceed $600 billion dollars. Concretes earliest known usage dates back to the time of the Mayans and earliest known small-scale production was as early as the 4th century B.C.
The History of Concrete
The word concrete comes from the Latin word “concretus” which means compact or condensed. Portland cement is the most common type of cement in general usage. It was patented by a British masonry worker in 1824. IT gets its name from its similar appearance to Portland limestone where it was extracted from the English Isle of Portland.
Concrete is a process of:
- mixing water
- aggregate
- cement
- additives that range between a number of components based on what is required for that particular job
Concrete has paved the way for the forward progress of the human race. This industry has created countless jobs, a means of safer and more efficient travel, and will continue to be a constant need everywhere you go. As the saying goes for anything solid and absolute “It is concrete”.
