The dam is 7,661 feet long and is measures to the top of it 607 feet above sea level and sits 594 feet above the rock base. In order to create this structure, 134.2 million cubic yards of earth had to be excavated and moved. The project used 35.6 million cubic yards of concrete. Along with an astonishing amount of concrete, 463,000 tonnes of steel were used, enough to build 63 Eiffel Towers.
Concrete is one of the most commonly used materials around the world for underwater structures due to how highly resistant it is to fire and water and the most widely used man-made material on the planet. According to the Washington Post, China has used more cement in 2011-2013 than the United States use in all of the 20th century. The total project cost including resettling over a million displaced people is estimated at $22.5 billion.
